The Sound Studio is an exciting, performance-based band program where students learn what it really means to play music together.
Designed for young musicians ages 7–17, this program helps students develop their ear, build ensemble skills, strengthen musicianship, and gain real-world performance experience in a supportive, fun environment.
Over the course of each 60 minute session, students will rehearse with a small group of musicians, learn authentic rock, pop or jazz music, and work toward two live showcase performances throughout the session.
Playing in a band teaches students so much more than notes and rhythms. Through The Sound Studio, students build:
Program Dates- The Sound Studio runs in 29-week sessions from October 2026 - May 2027 with three vacation days built in for Thanksgiving, Christmas/New Years and Spring Break. Two sessions are built in to the end of the session for any unexpected closures.
Students may sign up throughout the year. They may be added to an existing band as openings become available, or new bands will be formed when there is enough interest within an age group and skill level.
We strongly recommend staying with the band through the entire session. Consistency helps each group develop musically, build trust, and prepare stronger performances.
Locations
Band rehearsals take place in a studio space located in Scotch Plains, Caldwell and Berkeley Heights. More locations coming soon.
Placement is based on age, skill level, instrument, availability, and overall band fit.
Small Group Format
Each band is intentionally kept small, with a maximum of 5–7 students per group.
Band Programs
We offer four band programs for students ages 7–17:
Opening Act
Rock and Pop Band | Ages 7–10
A fun introduction to playing in a rock band. Students learn how to rehearse together, follow song structure, keep time, and perform as a group.
Headliners
Rock and Pop Band | Ages 11–17
For older students ready to take their rock band skills further. Students work on full songs, ensemble playing, stage presence, and performance confidence.
Jazz Foundations
Jazz Band | Ages 7–10
A supportive introduction to jazz-style playing. Students begin developing rhythm, listening skills, groove, and basic improvisation concepts.
Groove Lab
Jazz Band | Ages 11–17
For older students interested in jazz, groove, improvisation, and ensemble collaboration. Students explore more advanced listening, feel, and musical communication.
Each group is carefully curated by age range, skill level, instrument, and overall fit so students are always playing with peers at a similar stage.
How Placement Works
After submitting the application, we’ll review your student’s age, instrument, experience level, availability, and musical interests. If you are a current Home Sweet Home student, your teacher will provide feedback on experience and readiness.
Because each band needs a balanced mix of instruments and skill levels, placement is not guaranteed until your student is matched with the appropriate group.
